While the turbine may appear slender in popular panoramic pictures, here you can see the actual scale of the structure. The maintenance of wind turbines takes place at predetermined intervals, usually once or twice a year, during which all important mechanical and electrical assemblies are checked. Minor repairs can also be carried out, and consumables such as greases, oils, and filters can be replaced. \ \ There is visitor center and office facilities for the service technicians. The lower section on the left is for maintenance personnel and spare parts. It is important to have replacement parts nearby in case some key part breaks. If possible, predictive maintenance can ensure minimal production breaks. As we ascend higher, the speed of the wind increases horizontally. Even if it was barely windy at the ground level, up here you can really feel the force of blowing wind. Facing the sun you can see the rotor and blades. \ \ At the back of the nacelle, there is a large heat exchanger that rejects the generated heat in the gearbox and electrical systems. On top of that, there are measurement systems for wind speed and direction. These are used to control power generation and to optimize the nacelle and rotor orientation toward the wind for optimal production. \ \ From up here, you can get an excellent overview of the surrounding scenery. Around you, there are both intensively forested areas and protected forests and wetlands. You can even spot a blast from the past: a peat production area that is still used to generate energy peat. Take note how much area is required for the roads and power lines. Besides the space this also causes fragmentation in nature. HotspotPanoramaOverlayTextImage_F0EB4109_E044_7050_41E3_7ACB4828EA4E.text = You have now arrived at the spot where all the rock and gravel materials are taken to build the roads and make the turbine sites and foundations stable enough. The amount of material required for the foundations of 41 turbines is significant and it leaves a huge excavation behind. \ \ When a forest area is modified into a wind power plant, the ecosystem of the area will change. It is therefore important to always avoid important areas for nature, bird migration routes, habitats of rare and sensitive species, and to minimize negative impacts before, during, and after construction. HotspotPanoramaOverlayTextImage_F3080E12_E045_F070_41D2_4CF3BC99B15C.text = You have now entered the base level of the turbine. Here, you can find the local turbine-specific control systems, and you can see the cables that transport the generated power from the generator to the nearest power station. The normal voltage level from the generator is 690 volt 3-phase alternating current, which is upgraded to 33 kilovolts at each turbine separately. This higher voltage level is required within the power plant to minimize resistive losses. \ \ In the middle of the base section, you can see the elevator that takes maintenance personnel to the nacelle. The lift trip up takes about 7 minutes. If you suffer from a fear of heights or claustrophobia, we do not recommend attempting the actual system. A special training is required to go up there. Besides the space this also causes fragmentation in nature. \ \ An essential part of the development team's competence profile is to be able to assess and include important areas for nature in to the plans. This is to ensure that the wind power plant has minimal impact on nature and wildlife and does not worsen the loss of nature. For example, here in Piiparinmäki, there are 7 Natura-2000 sites, including internationally important bird areas. These were left outside the power plant's construction. Additionally, inside the plant area, there are over 150 areas protected by nature, forest and water acts, over 20 other critical areas, over 90 locations of threatened and protected species, and 10 protected springs. The amount of material required for the foundations of 41 turbines is significant and it leaves a huge excavation behind. \ \ When a forest area is modified into a wind power plant, the ecosystem of the area will change. It is therefore important to always avoid important areas for nature, bird migration routes, habitats of rare and sensitive species, and to minimize negative impacts before, during, and after construction. \ \ The new habitats created by the construction often attract a different set of species creating a change in the ecosystem composition and function. For example, this kind of rocky habitat attracts totally different species than the forest that used to be here. It would have been beneficial to plan the landscaping and restoration of the quarry in more detail. Better restoration of these sites could offer ecological and social benefits, perhaps even new business opportunities.
